Responsible Trade
Host a Screening of Maquilapolis: City of Factories or Attend a Screening Party Near You

Host or Attend a Screening: Interested in learning more about international trade and its impacts on communities and the environment? Host or attend a screening of the film Maquilapolis: City of Factories and share with your community the riveting tale of women factory worker's fight for justice and a healthy environment.

About the film: Since the inception of NAFTA, many U.S. factories have left the States and set up shop in Mexico, where environmental standards are less stringent and labor is cheaper. With many small farmers out of work (thanks also to NAFTA), new factory jobs on the border are highly sought after, despite the fact that workers often labor in highly toxic environments and receive wages insufficient to support them or their families.

Moreover, the factories routinely dump their waste into the surrounding neighborhoods, affecting the environment and health of children and family members of the factory workers.

Maquilapolis documents to heroic efforts of women factory workers in Tijuana to fight for their basic rights as workers and people and to end their mistreatment at the hands of foreign corporations.

How to Get Involved: Become acquainted with the real impacts of NAFTA while watching the documentary Maquilapolis: City of Factories. Then share this profound film with others by hosting a screening in your community! With the help of our host guide and viewer's guide, your film screening will allow others to learn about and discuss the impact of NAFTA on worker's rights and the environment, while offering them an opportunity to take action to promote a fair trade alternative.

If you don't feel comfortable hosting your own event, contact Susan at 202-548-6593 or susan.ellsworth@gmail.com to locate a screening near you.

The Sierra Club will provide the guidance and materials (including the film) necessary to get your house party off the ground and to make it a fun and enlightening activity.
