Where: Holy Trinity Wilderness Cathedral
Why: he Greater Holy Trinity Wilderness Cathedral which includes
the Zwickey Creek (proposed) Vulture Sanctuary, The Great Spirit
Wilderness, The Marjorie and Kenneth Russell Research Natural Area and
Alligator Preserves is perhaps the finest example of intact old growth
native gene pools on private lands in E. Texas. Many of the photos found
at www.freephotogallery.org were taken there. It is home to eagles,
ospreys, cormorants, herons, egrets, pelicans,and many other birds.
Cougers, bobcats, red wolf/coyote hybrids, coyotes, river otters, beavers,
alligators and other animals are present. The only surviving long-leaf
pines West of the Trinity River are found here as well as centuries old
oaks, magnolias and other species.
In addition huge boulders, rare in E.
Texas provide habitat for rare ferns and other plants. Catahoula
wastelands are home to numerous cacti and other rare plants. One of the
finest native prairies in E. Texas features numerous prairie flowers and
grasses. With over 2,500 acres and 12 linear miles of riparian habitat
