Show and tell about places in nature that were, or are, important to you. Big majestic places, or everyday places.
Who: Jonathan
Where: Sandy Hook, Gateway National Recreation Area
Why:Sandy Hook is a fascinating location for both history and nature. The remanants of the fort and the restored gun emplacements make for interesting tours, along with some of the recovered ordnance. The old jail is also a cool little museum with some excellent dioromas and artifacts. The park itself is an outstanding facility for observing and studying many natural phenomenon of Earth science and biology. I have gathered some excellent rock, mineral and fossil specimens here. I have also gathered a lot of cool oceanic speciments, such as shells and horseshoecrab sheds for use in classroom instruction. Every year Sandy
Hook always gives me something special. Last year out I found a seahorse skull in some washed up seaweed. Lastly, I find it to be a great place to relax, enjoy quiet and calm and delve the mysteries of existence. Sandy Hook rocks for all of these reasons.
Who: Nellie
Where: Sandy Hook, Gateway National Recreation Area
Why:I grew up on the Jersey Shore. Sandy Hook is part of the Gateway National Recreation Area. Ever since I can remember, it has been one of the most fascinating places for me. It is so quiet, yet surrounded by dense development: New York CIty to the North, suburban NJ to the West and South. My first experience there involved picking up trash on the beach and at the same time learning about all the flora and fauna that inhabited the pennisula. This was when I realized we are to the brink of disaster due to our ignorance...and I was only 6 years old.
