Plum Island

Who: Jack
Where: Plum Island, MA

Why: I lived on the island from 1978 to 1986 and took frequent 9-mile walks along the beach. There were only 800 year-round residents then. The solitude, the birds, the sound of the surf -- you could fantasize and get away from the hum of society.

Picking the plums every year and fermenting them into plum wine was a treat, and a special moment at Christmas with friends. There was once a hermit that lived in a shack, and we would visit him and talk for hours. We would surf-fish for striped bass and have a fish fry / clam bake at sunset. A magnificent place, embedded in my memories.
