Chesser Prairie in the Okefenokee Swamp in southeast Georgia

Who: Bill Dockery
Where: Chesser Prairie after a storm
Why: A squall swept over our skiff on the Suwannee Canal, big
raindrops that pocked the steely water like falling stones. A squall of
dragonflies followed, fifty or more moving through the boat, stopping for
a fraction of a second to look us over, then whipping away. The skies
began to clear as we turned into the Okefenokee, cumulus clouds roiling
away to the east. The water moved from metalic to tannic brown to vivid
blue. There were gators on the peat, herons, egrets, a sandhill crane. We
cut the engine, floated among the lilie pads and the red & yellow
neverwets. A pig frog began to bellow in the distance -- that was all. The
boat drifted. We drifted. Then home.
