Show and tell about places in nature that were, or are, important to you. Big majestic places, or everyday places.
Who: Anonymous
Where: My own backyard
Why: When my 11 year old daughter died of cancer, I was
griefstricken and unsure of how I could continue to live. I turned to
nature for solace, most specifically to the birds in my urban backyard. I
wanted to create a place would be a memorial to my child, as well as one
that would attract more birds and other wildlife in our barren suburban
setting. I tore out our hillside full of useless bushes that were planted
by the developer of our housing tract. I spent two years replacing them
with perennials that attract birds and butterflies, as well as flowering
and fruiting trees, bushes, and groundcovers. I have been rewarded by
numerous species of birds, as well as possums, skunks, squirrels,
raccoons, and gorgeous owls and hawks.
One day when I was watering some new plants with a wand sprayer on the hose, a beautiful little
ruby-throated hummingbird landed on the sprayer, not three feet from my
face. Completely oblivious to the human standing behind him, he frolicked
in the water and washed his beak and drank. He had no idea of the wonder
he brought to this grieving soul.
While my yard is a work in progress, and
not nearly as grandiose as the natural wonders I have seen across the USA,
it is my own special place to find solace in this chaotic world. When you
can't get away to the national parks or secluded spots, it's nice to be
able to step out your door and renew your spirit with the beautiful sounds
and fascinating sights of nature.
