Show and tell about places in nature that were, or are, important to you. Big majestic places, or everyday places.
Who: Erik
Where: Hulahula River Valley, ANWR
Why: In June of this year, I and two friends were fortunate enough
to visit the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and undertake a backpacking
trip along the Hulahula River. 16 days later, after encounters with
grizzlies, moose, musk oxen, plovers, gulls, porcupine, ptarmigan, fox,
ground squirrel, wolf, Dall’s sheep, bumblebees, mosquitoes, caterpillars,
endless tundra tussocks, raging stream crossings, dried food, rockslides,
snowstorms, windstorms, talus slopes and soggy wetlands, we flew out from
the stunning Coastal Plain 10 pounds lighter and filled with a lifetime of
memories.
This is a place without peer. A place to be preserved and
cherished by this and future generations. May we find the humility and
wisdom to allow it to remain as it is--wild and untrammeled.
