The Sierra Club shares some special places to explore, enjoy and protect.
"...It is densely forested
down to the water's edge with trees that never seem to have suffered from thirst or fire
or the axe of the lumberman in all their long century lives. Beneath soft, shady clouds,
with abundance of rain, they flourish in wonderful strength and beauty..."
- John Muir, Travels in Alaska, 1915
Beautiful, lush and remote, Alaska's rainforests are the largest remaining pristine
temperate rainforest on Earth, a last remnant of an increasingly rare ecosystem. Within
these wild places, salmon fill the streams every spawning season, and wolves, bald eagles
and Alaskan brown bear thrive in "endless rhythm and beauty," as John Muir
observed. These forests sustain fisheries, provide habitat for wildlife and have nurtured
the Alaskan spirit for generations.
