Congress is back at work and the program is ready for a busy fall ahead. Although not many activist events happened around the country during the summer months, Global Population and Environment Program activists have been preparing for the big election in November!

Please contact the Global Population and Environment Program with details about your future events, presentations and other gatherings. Send us photographs and creative ideas. We encourage new activists to reach out and let us know about the great work that you do. Contact Sarah Fairchild at 202.675.2396 or sarah.fairchild@sierraclub.org to let her know about what is happening in your area or for help in planning an event.

Notes From the Field:

Road Trip to Florida

Annette and Tallah group
Annette Souder and Tallah group activists

In July, Annette Souder traveled to Florida to share the work of the Global Population and Environment Program with Sierra Club members. In Orlando, population activist superstar Cecilia Height kicked off the evening meeting where almost 40 people came out to learn more about why population matters in Florida and around the world. In Tallahassee, Annette had the chance to talk with dedicated Club members new to the population issue. For more information about population activities in Florida, contact Cecilia Height at cheight@CFL.RR.COM

Oregon Activism
Planned Parenthood Columbia/Willamette (PPCW) staff members, population activists Greg Jacob, Oregon Chapter Population Issues Coordinator, Albert Kaufman, Population Connection and Sierra Club activist and Ramona Rex, Chair of the Columbia Group Population Committee, met with Senator Gordon Smith's local staff person in August to talk about population issues. PPCW shared information about an educational exchange program they've started with a family planning organization in Peru. The program is aimed at finding out how PPCW can reach out to Hispanic youth in Oregon. Greg spoke about the Global Gag rule, Albert shared information about the ten year anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), and Ramona talked about the administration's decision to withhold another $34 million from UNFPA. Ecuador Study Tour presentations: From New Jersey to Georgia!

Todd Daniel and Centennial Group
Todd Daniel and Sierra Club Centennial Group activists

Bonnie Tillery, Population Issues Coordinator of the New Jersey Chapter and newly appointed member of the Global Population and Environment Program National Committee and Todd Daniel of the Georgia Chapter gave presentations on the Global Population and Environment Program field study tour to Ecuador in their home states this past summer. Both have done an excellent job presenting to Sierra Club Groups and Chapters. Todd recently sent in a report about his presentation given at the Sierra Club Centennial Group in Marietta, GA in September. He made the presentation a mix of travel adventure and population education. Todd reported that he was really surprised at the strong reception he got. After the presentation he even received a call and e-mails from people saying how much they enjoyed it. Congratulations to Todd for his continued outreach efforts and stellar population presentations. For more information about population activities in Georgia, please contact Todd at todddan@EARTHLINK.NET For more information about population activism in New Jersey, contact Bonnie Tillery at Blt44blt@aol.com.
