The Safe Climate Act

Our Position: support
Bill Number: HR 1590
Sponsor: Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA)
Legislative Session: 2007

This bill is the most aggressive global warming legislation introduced in the House. The Safe Climate Act sets emission reduction targets of 80% below 1990 levels by 2050 through a multi-sector approach. The bill requires clean car standards to meet or excede those adopted by the California Air Resources Board. The bill also sets a national renewable energy standard that requires at least 20% of electricity generation to come from renewable resources by 2020. This bill also requires electricity producers to increase efficiency standards in order to achieve end-user savings. While implementing aggressive strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, this bill also protects state regulations and initiatives to reduce their own greenhouse gas emissions. Meeting these emission reduction targets would contain global temperatures and reduce our carbon dioxide emissions while sustaining our economy.
