5 Energy:
National Renewable Electricity Standard of 20% by 2020

Our Position: support
Bill Number: HR 969
Sponsor: Representative Udall (D-NM), Representative Platts (R-PA)
Legislative Session: 2008

This legislation would require 20% of our nation's electricity to be generated from clean, renewable sources such as wind, solar, biomass, and geothermal by 2020.  We have the technology today to generate electricity from sources other than dirty, polluting fossil fuels that contribute ghastly amounts of global warming pollution.  25 states have already adopted state renewable portfolio standards - a national standard would put us on the path to curbing global warming by reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 233 million metric tons and saving consumers $10.5 billion on their energy bills by 2020.

Status

On February 9, 2007 this bill was referred to the Subcommittee on Energy and Air Quality.
