Energy:
Gasoline for America's Security Act of 2005
Our Position: oppose
Bill Number: HR3893
Sponsor: Joe Barton (R-TX)
Legislative Session: 2006
This bill, pushed by Republican leadership, is yet another energy bill that fails to solve America's energy crisis. The bill repeats the mistakes of the past by proposing the same failed energy policies that have led to high gas prices and America's oil dependence. Under the guise of increasing refinery capacity for gasoline, heating oil, diesel fuel, and jet fuel, it reduces environmental and other regulations affecting refineries under the Clean Air Act; and coordinate permitting requirements and other regulations affecting refineries at the federal, state, and local levels. The bill eliminates environmental safeguards to benefit the oil and other polluting industries instead of providing real solutions to help Americans.
Status
Passed House on October 7, 2005 when Republican leadership held voting open for nearly an hour, twisting arms until enough votes were secured for passage. The bill finally passed with a vote of 212-210.
