Clean Smokestacks Act

Our Position: support
Bill Number: HR 1451
Sponsor: Henry Waxman (D-CA)
Legislative Session: 2006

The Clean Power Act and the Clean Smokestacks Act are air pollution bills that will clean up emissions from power plants. The bills target four pollutants common to power plants: nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, mercury, and carbon dioxide (CO2). If implemented, the bills would achieve significant reductions in all four pollutants by 2010, including a 21% reduction in CO2 and a 90% reduction in mercury. The bills would also require all dirty old power plants to install the most modern pollution control technology.

Status

These bills have been introduced in previous years, and in 2002 the Senate version was passed out of committee but never received a floor vote. The current versions were introduced in early 2005.
