Amendment to Deny Family Planning Access
Our Position: oppose
Bill Number: H.AMDT.464 to HR2601
Sponsor: Chris Smith (R-NJ)
Legislative Session: 2005
Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) offered an amendment to the Foreign Relations Authorization Act (H.R. 2601) to eliminate contraceptives from the list of prevention methods available under a new program to treat and prevent obstetric fistula-- a debilitating injury with lifelong consequences for women. This vote jeopardizes the health and lives of women and ultimately the environment by limiting access to a full range of family planning options. Access to quality reproductive health care and family planning is a human right -- one that Representative Smith put at risk for women around the world.
Status
By a narrow margin of 223-205, the House voted on July 19, 2005 to adopt the Smith amendment.
