"John Muir (1838-1914), American explorer and naturalist, was born in Dunbar, Scotland. He was a member of the U.S. Geodetic Survey in the Great Basin (1876-79) and while in Alaska spotted the glacier that now bears his name. In recognition of Muir's efforts as a conservationist and crusader for national parks, Muir Woods National Monument, near San Francisco, was established in 1908."
