Print this page (pdf file) Rhode Island's Big River Management Area includes beautiful
forests, hills, sand dunes and wetlands. It is home to 222 bird
species, 55 mammal species and 39 reptile species and is a haven
for hiking, canoeing, hunting, fishing and horseback riding
enthusiasts. The Big River area is a local favorite and has evolved
into one of the state's most popular recreation spots.
But a long debated proposal by the Kent County Water Authority
to build a reservoir here has resurfaced, threatening this open
space. The reservoir would destroy thousands of acres of this
unique area. Both the Northeast Army Corps of Engineers and
the Environmental Protection Agency have determined that the
reservoir would have "very large, severe impacts" on the area's
wildlife and wetlands.
Sierra Club is working to educate people about Big River's value
as a wild and open space and about the environmental impacts of
this reservoir, and encouraging the adoption of strong water conservation
measures.
