Where Does Grazing Occur on Federal Lands? The links below connect you to maps of the West, or individual Western States, to show where grazing occurs on federal lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management, National Forest and National Grassland. Some of the maps also provide an additional layer with precipitation data, to show where grazing occurs on "lands that receive an average annual precipitation of 12 inches or less." The Club's grazing policy calls for focusing work toward ending commercial grazing in various key areas; areas lacking precipitation are more easily mapped than other priority areas. Neither the Forest Service nor Bureau of Land Management made not claims to the accuracy of their data, and made it clear that their grazing allotment mapping process was "a work in progress" and as yet incomplete. Further, in some areas, local agency GIS employees did not use the same naming and numbering conventions used in agency's central allotment databases. Thus, areas where grazing allotments have yet to be mapped by the agencies and areas that could not be connected to each agency's master list of allotments will show up as ungrazed on these maps. These maps were from data provided from 2002-2005, and do not reflect management decisions since that time. Average annual precipitation data from 1961-1990 was provided by the Natural Resources Conservation Service Water and Climate Center, Natural Resources Conservation Service National Cartography and Geospatial Center, PRISM Model, and the Oregon Climate Service at Oregon State University. This data models average annual precipitation contours in 2-inch intervals. Spatial resolution of the data is approximately 2 km; local precipitation variation due to topographic variability within that resolution may not be represented. Ownership data is from Federal Lands of the United States, National Atlas of the United States, Reston, VA. Only areas of 640 acres or more are included. There may be private inholdings within the boundaries of Federal lands in this map layer. These maps were compiled with the help of Big Sky Conservation Institute and Forest Guardians to provide general West-wide and state-wide perspectives on the status of livestock grazing on federal land managed by the National Forests (including the National Grasslands) and Bureau of Land Management. To determine whether specific sections of federally managed land near you currently allows grazing, we encourage you to contact local agency offices to get the most current status information and allotment maps.
