Zero Waste
Zero Beverage Container Waste Campaign

The Sierra Club has had long-standing support for beverage container deposits With the rapid growth of single-serve bottled water poised to overtake carbonated soft drinks, the typical American is now consuming 450 beverage containers per year, up from 300 in 1997.

To stem this flood of containers, the Club has signed on as a sponsor to the Container Recycling Institute's Zero Beverage Container Waste Campaign, which calls on local units of government to commit to eliminating litter, landfilling and incineration of beverage containers by 2020 through elimination, reuse and incentives to recycling, such as expanded deposits.

The Club's Bottled Water Campaign also encourages restricted use of bottled water for a number of waste and resource use reasons.
